Cultural Kitchen, Pacific Northwest Exchange, and Teen Travel Workshop are Hostelling International's programs specifically for Girl Scouts. The Girl Scouts and Hostelling International have grown caring world citizens together for over 50 years. Investigate a new country while exploring the meaning of culture in a series of four meetings!
Girls complete cultural activities in a Hostelling International-led
introduction meeting in Seattle, then develop a creative presentation on
a country of their choice in two troop-led meetings (step-by-step
curriculum provided). For the culminating meeting, travel to
the Seattle or Port Townsend hostel – your choice – to cook an ethnic
meal
to share with fellow hostellers, unveil your presentations, and spend
the night! Groups of 6 or more.
NEW! Community Walls! Community Walls gets girls to work together to explore the concept of community, and create a work of art that expresses their unique visions of their own local community! Community Walls projects consist of four two-hour sessions. The first and last session are led by a trained facilitator, while the middle two are led by the girl scout leaders. Completed art pieces are displayed at Hostelling International’s Seattle hostel to give world travelers a youth’s perspective of life in Washington State. In this way, Hostelling International gives youth a voice, and projects this voice to an international audience of travelers, who are able to view a unique expression of the local community. When they return to their homes across the globe, they take back impressions made by American youth. Groups of 6 or more.
NEW! Pacific Northwest Exchange (Seattle to Portland) Hostelling International Washington and Hostelling International Oregon are proud to present a NEW educational program offering exclusively for Girl Scouts! Two unique programs are combined to create a one-of-a-kind opportunity for making new friends (while keeping the old!). ![]()
Expand your travel skills with a special trip planning workshop at Hostelling International’s Seattle hostel! Afterward, put your skills into action and travel as a troop to one of Hostelling International’s Portland hostels to meet an Oregon troop! Oregon troop will be hard at work making a special cultural meal and country presentation to share with the visiting Washington troop. All girls will have a chance to try out their travel and communication skills while meeting new people, learning about a new country, and trying new foods. How much better can it get then that?
Getting down to details Here's how it works. After completing a Pacific Northwest Exchange trip planning workshop in Seattle troops will be emailed dates for the cultural meal in Portland. When a troop sees a date for the final meal that works with their schedule, they may contact either Hostelling International Washington or Hostelling International Oregon to reserve their spot. Travel costs are the responsibility of the troops, and adults are needed during the overnight to meet Girl Scout safety requirements.
Hostelling International Washington State and the Girl Scouts of Western Washington are proud to announce a new collaboration between the Girl Scout's Travel Pathways and Hostelling International's World Travel 101!
