Upcoming Girl Scout Events

Below are the upcoming program dates for World Travel 101 and Cultural Kitchen events for Girl Scouts. To register for events, please email Carissa at programs@hiwsc.org with your name, the number of girls you are signing up, and the event date.
-World Travel 101 -
World Travel 101 is a two hour workshop teaching girls how to plan for, pack for, and stay safe during a trip. The workshop costs $3, and girls earn the Discover the World patch. Upcoming event dates include:
  • March 27th 2 - 4 pm Seattle HI
  • April 11th 2 - 4 pm Seattle HI
  • May 23rd 2 - 4 pm Seattle HI
  • August 1st 2 - 4 pm Seattle HI
If none of these dates work for you but you have a troop who is still interested in our workshop, please email Carissa at programs@hiwsc.org.

- Cultural Kitchen -

Cultural Kitchens are an opportunity for a troop to explore a country through its cuisine. Troops will have two or three initial meetings with their troop leaders to pick and research a country, as well as explore ideas of cultural awareness through a series of games and worksheets. The meetings will culminate in a final meeting at a Washington State hostel (Port Townsend or Seattle), where girls will work together to cook a community meal from their focus country. Girls will be able to invite hostel guests to join in their meal, and will share what they have learned about their focus country during a short presentation to their guests.

The program cost of $17/girl includes all teaching materials, training costs for troop leaders, all meetings including the final meeting, and groceries for the final meeting. Overnights are available at the hostels at an additional cost. Girls who complete the program earn the Discover the World patch. Upcoming dates include:

Norway by foot - Winter Wanderlust 2/28/10

Thoralf Gamlem, author of Step by Step: From Oslo to Trondheim, shares his experiences hiking and hostelling through Norway. His talk will be the fifth and final speaking event of Hostelling International's Winter Wanderlust speaker series. All events are free and open to all. Come one, come all!

Music of the Middle East - Winter Wanderlust - 02/21/10

Don Baragiano, founder of the Seattle based world music group Hejira, will be joining us for our next Winter Wanderlust event! Don spent two years living in Saudi Arabia and will be sharing with us his insights into life and music in the region. As an added bonus, Don will be illustrating his talk about the country and its people by playing his own live examples of Saudi music.

The Balkans and Back: Winter Wanderlust 2/14/10

Our Winter Wanderlust speaker series continues to shine this Sunday, February 14th, with our third speaker, Shon Meckfessel, who will share his insights into the Balkans. Shon has spent over three years living and traveling throughout the Balkans and the Middle East, and published a book about his experiences entitled Suffled How It Gosh: A North American Anarchist in the Balkans. He is now a PhD candidate at the University of Washington in Discourse Analysis, and a Master candidate in Teaching ESL. An avid traveler, intellectual, and conversationalist, Shon's unique experiences and perspectives on this complicated and often misunderstood region will make this event a not to be missed discussion.

New Event! World Travel 101 Hostelling International will be running a World Travel 101 workshop at the Kirkland Library on Saturday, March 6th from 1-3pm. The workshop is free and open to all, so if you're been inspired by our talks but don't know where to begin, join us to learn what to think about when planning a trip: what to bring, how to get there, where to stay, how to pay for it, and how to stay safe.

Winter Wanderlust Speaker Series - Exploring Turkey

We continue our successful Winter Wanderlust speaker series this Sunday with Jean Bullard, one of the first hostellers in the States and highly successful children book author, as she takes us on a virtual exploration of Turkey! Jean first visited Turkey in the '60s while traveling the world with her husband, three kids, and their Buick. She loved her time in Turkey and has developed deep ties to the country through the people she met, who she considers her family. As always, the event is free and open to all!

Winter Wanderlust Series - Abdi Sami - 1/31/09

Help us kick off our February Winter Wanderlust speaker series with Abdi Sami, Associate Producer of "Rick Steves' Iran" and avid promoter of peace.

Mr Sami spent 14 years as the General Manager and CEO of Dream Quest Images, which under his management produced two Academy Award winning movies, "The Abyss" and "Total Recall". A native born Iranian and long time U.S. resident, Mr. Sami has been involved in promoting peace. He has worked with Mercy Corps in Iran and Afghanistan, served as a board member for the Foundation for Self Sufficiency in Central America, and currently sits on the boards of the United Nations Association of Seattle and the Voices Education Project.

Having traveled to over 30 countries in his life, Mr. Sami knows firsthand the transformative power of travel. Come listen to his talk at our Winter Wanderlust kick-off event on Sunday, January 31st from 2-4pm. The talk will be held at the HI-Seattle, conveniently located in Seattle's International District.

Work / Volunteer Abroad Info Session

Interested in working or volunteering abroad? Want to know more? Come talk with people who have done it! On November 22 from 2 - 5 pm Hostelling International will be hosting an informational session on working / volunteering abroad. Speakers will come from a variety of backgrounds and geographical areas of experience, with something for everyone. We will have a brief session altogether to introduce the various speakers, then attendees will have the chance to break off and talk to individual speakers in a smaller group setting. Come one, come all!

Bellingham Hostel Development Meeting

The Washington State Council of Hostelling International is exploring the potential for a new hostel in the Bellingham/Fairhaven area. If you would like to find out more about this effort and, hopefully assist with it, please come to an information and organizing meeting we are having in Bellingham.
