Community Walls

The Community Walls program is an educational outreach program that asks youth ages 11 to 17: "What is it like to live in your community?" The program uses original artwork to help young people gain greater cultural understanding, define their community, express what it is like to live there, and build pride in their culture. The artwork program is coordinated by local Hostelling International hostels and councils and is displayed in hostel buildings and administrative offices for public viewing. Community Walls utilizes a standards-based curriculum.

World Travel 101

Going on a class trip? The World Travel 101 workshop is a perfect introduction to the world of traveling. Hostelling International Washington State educators and travel-savvy volunteers teach participants all the nitty gritty things to think about when planning a trip: what to bring, how to get there, where to stay, how to pay for it, and how to stay safe. Hands-on activities and discussions bring the lessons home and inspire participants to get out and explore our world as a responsible and respectful traveler, traveling with an open mind.

Cultural Kitchen

About the Program

The Cultural Kitchen curriculum is standards-based and qualifies as a Service Learning experience for participants. The program began in 2000 in Chicago, and currently reaches thousands of Public School students national-wide. Students who complete the Cultural Kitchen program continue to demonstrate enthusiasm for learning about new cultures and approach the world and its people with expanded mindsets. The Cultural Kitchen program at Hostelling International Washington State is designed to meet 12 Washington State Board of Education Learning Goals and 32 Learning Standards, with 5 hours of lessons based on the Coverdell WorldWise Building Bridges curriculum and inquiry-based research

The Cultural Kitchen program creates peace by helping students gain respect for different people and cultures as they travel through their own communities, their lives, and our world. Hostelling International Washington State is entering its third year running the Cultural Kitchen program, and is excited to expand the reach of the program in the coming year.

Student Feedback:

“Being in the Cultural Kitchen program opened my eyes about other cultures. It taught me that you have to be open minded when you meet people from different backgrounds than yours. You have to be understanding about their culture. We are all different people, but if we are understanding about other people we can become a better, more peaceful world.”

“During my stay at Cultural Kitchen, I had a great time learning about Brazil and other people I encountered. I met so many people, it was just fun. The food was great, the presentation went awesome, I learned a lot of new things, and I can’t wait to go to Brazil. All I know is that I won’t forget this wonderful experience.”

"In the Cultural Kitchen program I learned that we should be sensitive when it comes to other cultures and try to see things from the other person's point of view."
